Professor Zhichuan Xu of Nanyang Technological University gives invited lecture

       Invited by Professor Yanglong Hou of Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Professor Zhichuan Xu from School of Materials Science & Engineering at Nanyang Technological University visited MSE on December 2 and delivered a lecture entitled “Engineering nanoparticle catalyst for energy applications”. Many College of Engineering professors and students attended the lecture.

         In the seminar, Xu talked about engineering AuPt nanoparticle surface for fuel cell and Li-air battery. He introduced the methods for determining the Pt coverage and surface composition. He also demonstrated a method to precisely control the surface composition of AuPt bimetallic nanoparticles using a surface energy manipulation strategy. With these AuPt nanoparticle catalysts, his group conducted a systemic study on the dependence of the methanol oxidation and CO oxidation activities on the surface composition. It was found that using these AuPt catalysts can lower the overpotential during the charge and discharge processes of Li-air battery. In addition, stabilizing Cu nanoparticles by alloying with Au and using them for electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide was also presented.

        Following the lecture, Prof. Xu had further communications with professors from MSE and exchanged thoughts on common interested areas. Xu also provided guidance to the students about research work and shared his experience of and feelings on research.

        Background Info.

        Zhichuan Xu is currently an assistant professor in materials science in the School of Materials Science & Engineering at Nanyang Technological University. His research interests include advanced nanoparticle synthesis, nanoparticle catalysts, nanostructured electrodes for batteries, biosensors, and etc.
